Protecting the Planet: UNFI Advances Better for All Impact Strategy

April 22, 2026          3 minute read

In honor of Earth Day, UNFI is reflecting on its commitment to protecting the planet and highlighting how its impact strategy, Better for All, is being put into action across the company.

Resilient Supply Chains

UNFI is investing in programs that strengthen supply chains, drive product quality and innovation, and safeguard the environment. This year, UNFI partnered with Stonyfield Organic and Whole Foods Market on a Carbon Insetting Project led by Organic Valley to facilitate emissions reductions across US organic dairy production. By directly investing in farm practices that reduce emissions and promote clean energy, UNFI can lower its climate impact while building a more resilient dairy sector.

Thriving Associates

Through comprehensive safety programs, well-being initiatives, volunteer events, and Belonging & Innovation Groups, UNFI is creating a workplace where associates feel safe, valued, and empowered. This month, associates participated in the annual Earth month volunteer campaign, supporting local organizations and making a difference in the communities where they live and work.

Efficient & Sustainable Operations

UNFI is focused on maximizing its operations to reduce emissions and costs while improving efficiency. This year, the company commissioned its eighth and largest rooftop solar array installation at the Riverside, California distribution center, a 6.7MW array that provides clean energy while lowering utility costs. UNFI also launched a Zero Waste Champions Network across all DCs to strengthen its waste diversion rate and achieve its goal of zero waste to landfill by 2030.

Nourished Communities

UNFI supports the health and well-being of communities across the U.S. and Canada by working with the UNFI Foundation to fund nonprofit organizations. This year, the UNFI Foundation launched it's 50 for 50 grants campaign, an initiative designed to award a grant in all 50 States and Canada, in honor of UNFI’s 50th anniversary.

“As we celebrate Earth Day, we remain guided by our impact strategy, which helps us operate more effectively and efficiently,” said Alisha Real, VP of Impact at UNFI. “I’m energized by the partnerships, programs, and progress we’ve made so far this year to reduce our environmental footprint and protect our planet.”
