UNFI and FoodRecovery.org Are Reducing Waste and Improving Access to Quality Food

Hunger Action Month is an annual effort each September to raise awareness and inspire action around hunger in America. In 2024, the UNFI Foundation announced grants totaling $1.5 million that will be distributed to 61 organizations focused on creating a more sustainable and equitable food system.
This year, we are spotlighting some of the incredible organizations we support and giving them the opportunity to tell us about their mission and unique story and share how the UNFI Foundation is helping them increase their ability to make an impact on the communities they serve.
One of our 2024 grantees is FoodRecovery.org, an online platform helping organizations such as restaurants, warehouses, schools and more that have surplus food give some of that excess to communities in need. Not only are these champions of sustainability diverting edible food away from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but they’re getting quality food into the hands of people facing hunger.
In the UNFI LinkedIn video, listen to Kenna Rogers, Director of Operations at FoodRecovery.org, talks about the organization’s mission and how, with help from the UNFI Foundation, they have been able to deliver an additional 240,000-plus pounds of food to those in need via foodbanks from California to Maine.
Throughout the month of September, we’ll continue to highlight even more organizations working to deliver on one or more of the UNFI Foundation’s new focus areas of climate smart agriculture, food access innovations, food equity, and local food economies.
