Supporting Associate Wellbeing Through Mental Health First Aid

Supporting associates’ mental health is an important part of UNFI’s commitment to safety and wellbeing. Through voluntary Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, associates are building greater awareness, helping reduce stigma, and strengthening their ability to recognize and respond to mental health needs in the workplace—benefiting our people, our business, and the communities where we live and work.
“Mental Health First Aid gives our leaders practical tools to better recognize when someone may be struggling and respond with empathy and care,” said Guillaume Bagal. “When associates feel supported, it strengthens trust, teamwork, and the overall wellbeing of the workplace.”
UNFI began offering MHFA training in fiscal year 2025 with the goal of having at least one certified Mental Health First Aider in each distribution center. After reaching that milestone, the program expanded to all associates, helping make mental health education and resources more accessible across the organization. With more than 125 MHFA-trained associates, interest in the voluntary program continues to grow.
The certification program combines self‑paced coursework with live sessions led by Jennifer Kelly‑Cooper, Senior Training Partner at UNFI and certified Mental Health First Aid instructor. Developed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the training uses real‑world scenarios and guided discussion to help associates build practical skills and confidence when responding to mental health or substance use challenges.
“The training helps leaders recognize when what may appear to be a performance or behavior issue could actually be a sign that someone is struggling,” said Jennifer Kelly-Cooper. “It provides a framework for approaching difficult conversations with greater awareness, empathy, and continued support.”
Feedback from participants reflects how the training is being applied across the organization. “As an HR professional, associates often turn to me in times of crisis,” said Rebecca Deyo, Associate HR Business Partner. “The training gives me confidence and comfort to know I’m now better equipped to support them effectively.”
“MHFA training has helped me better recognize signs of mental health struggles, respond with empathy, and guide people to the right resources,” said Jena Lynch, Senior Environmental Health & Safety Manager. “These skills aren’t just valuable at work—they’re valuable in everyday life.”
UNFI’s investment in Mental Health First Aid training is part of a broader Mental Health Journey, a comprehensive effort to expand access to resources, build associate capability, and continue integrating mental wellbeing into the company’s culture.
