Hunger Action Month Loaves & Fishes
Each year, billions of pounds of fresh food are wasted that could otherwise be used to feed people fighting food insecurity all across the country. With hunger continuing to be a serious challenge for many Americans, each September, Hunger Action Month gives us a chance to raise awareness and inspire action around hunger. In 2024, the UNFI Foundation announced $1.5 million in grants that will be distributed to 61 organizations focused on creating a more sustainable and equitable food system.
Loaves & Fishes is one of those 61 organizations and works to provide food to those in need with the mission of ending hunger and transforming lives. Food insecurity is an unfortunate reality in communities across America, and Loaves & Fishes is doing its part to deliver healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy to individuals who don’t have access to these items.
With support from the UNFI Foundation, the organization will be able to add one additional food rescue driver per year. By doing that, Loaves & Fishes will have the power to deliver nearly 1.25 million additional meals to people in need over the course of a year.
In the LinkedIn video, listen to Kiley Benson, Executive Director at Loaves & Fishes, and Emily Kelson, Grants Manager at Loaves & Fishes, explain why their mission is so critical and how the UNFI Foundation is enabling them to grow their ability to fight hunger.
The UNFI Foundation continues to expand its impact across its new focus areas of climate smart agriculture, food access innovations, food equity, and local food economies. Stay tuned for more on how we’re giving back to organizations that support our mission of empowering changemakers to create a more equitable and sustainable food system.
