Driving Excellence: UNFI Celebrates Elite Truck Drivers

Every day, UNFI truck drivers log thousands of miles to deliver quality food that keeps communities across North America nourished. This year, nearly half of them earned recognition as Elite Drivers for consistently going above and beyond. 

Elite Drivers represent the best of the best. They’re not just skilled behind the wheel—they exceed the company standards for safety, service, and professionalism. Whether it’s building strong relationships with customers or consistently driving with care and respect, they set the standard for what it means to Do The Right Thing. 

Many of these drivers have been with UNFI for decades. Some started in the warehouse and grew their careers on the road. Others have driven for the same distribution center (DC) for years, becoming familiar faces in the communities they serve. Their stories are as impressive as their work ethic and impact. 

“UNFI has been a great company to work for over the past 45 years. Being an Elite Driver is an honor, but what really makes me proud is serving our customers and knowing I’m helping take care of the communities we reach every day — and I still love hitting the road after all these years,” said Nick Santa Maria, UNFI’s longest-tenured driver from the Stockton, CA DC. 

In 2025, our drivers, supported by our transportation teams, delivered over 574 million cases, drove more than 120 million miles, and served 1.3 million customers.  

During UNFI’s recent Warehouse & Driver Appreciation Week celebration, Elite Drivers were entered into a drawing to be recognized with the title of Elite Driver of the Year—along with a special monetary reward. The winning drivers’ DCs also received a brand-new premium International RH13 tractor, complete with leather interior, heated seats, an upgraded sound system, and other luxury features designed with drivers in mind. This investment is just one example of how UNFI continues to enhance the associate experience and recognize the vital role our drivers play in our success. 

This year’s Elite Drive of the Year winners are Armando Cruz from our Howell, NJ DC and Brandon Bynum from our Hopkins, MN DC.  

We’re proud to celebrate nearly 1,200 Elite Drivers—not just for what they deliver, but for the way they embody our values and the inspiration they bring to all of us at UNFI.
