Long-term success of the organic sector requires a consistent investment in research and education, and promotion of certified organic that does not exist today. An Organic Research and Promotions Order would expand the reach and benefits of organics through a collective research and marketing program. UNFI supports this initiative as it would help distinguish organic in the market place, grow demand and educate the consumer.
UNFI unequivocally supports the full disclosure of ingredients to consumers, believing they have a right to know whether products contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms). We feel that the cultivation of GMOs and their presence in our food supply pose a threat to human, animal, and environmental health, and therefore, are fundamentally contrary to our vision of a sustainable future. We embrace certified organic as the gold standard of non-GMO food production.
Every four to five years, Congress passes a bundle of legislation, known as the Farm Bill, which sets national agriculture, nutrition, conservation and forestry policy. UNFI supports our industry by lobbying Congress to ensure that organics receive appropriate funding and direction for key priorities. The 2014 Farm Bill was a win of historic proportions for organics, and we are proud to have been part of that process.
The USDA Organic label guarantees production methods and ensures that certain ingredients are not used, such as toxic persistent pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, sewage sludge or irradiation.
The National Organic Program (NOP) is a regulatory
program within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
that is responsible for developing national standards for organically produced products. The NOP uses the USDA Organic label to inform consumers as to whether or not products meet these standards.
