UNFI Activates Rooftop Solar Array at Texas Distribution Center
Providence, RI -- Nov 18, 2014 -- UNFI today announced the activation of the company’s fifth solar project at its 590,000 square foot distribution center in Lancaster, Texas. The facility opened in 2010 and has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The 655 kilowatt (kW) rooftop solar array will generate more than 1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean energy annually, bringing UNFI’s total production to over 5 million kWh per year.

“Lancaster demonstrates UNFI’s collective approach to environmental responsibility in many ways, including our commitment to expand both our successful solar and LEED® certification programs,” said Tom Dziki, Chief Human Resources and Sustainability Officer.

UNFI’s renewable energy and sustainable building design, construction and operation efforts are key components of the company’s commitment to minimize its environmental footprint. The Lancaster facility is the company’s third distribution center to achieve LEED® Gold certification, in addition to its corporate headquarters facility, which achieved LEED® Silver certification. Three other facilities in Aurora, CO, Racine, WI, and Hudson Valley, NY are awaiting final certification from USGBC, but are also expected to achieve Gold ratings.

In addition to its rooftop solar panels, notable features of UNFI’s Lancaster distribution center include:
  • Over 97% of all office equipment and appliances in building are Energy Star rated
  • 20% of all building materials made with recycled content
  • 75% of all construction waste materials were properly recycled and/or reused
  • Energy reduction and lighting power reduction of 30% and 18%, respectively
  • Use of solar panels for two dock levelers
  • Ammonia-based refrigeration system, more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient than other refrigerants
  • Water use reduction of over 35% using motion-activated sensors, flow controls and rainwater recovery cistern
