UNFI Opens New Corporate Headquarters in Providence, RI
January 26, 2010: In keeping with one of our core values, “Social and environmental responsibility for the health of the planet,” the new UNFI corporate headquarters in Providence has been built inside and out with energy savings and low emissions in mind. Located inside the refurbished American Locomotive Works building, water and energy use have been reduced by 40% and 25% respectively, through the use of motion activated sensors and flow controls. The building also boasts a solar panel system that produces 175,000 kWh annually, thereby reducing by the amount of electricity UNFI needs to buy from the grid.
Additionally, all office carpets are made from 100% recycled materials, the interior doors are Forest Stewardship Council certified, low or zero VOC materials were used for construction and interior finishes, and all office furniture is Green Guard certified.
UNFI has applied for Silver certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System for the new headquarters. LEED® certification is a third party verification that a building meets green measures, both in structure and performance. For more details about the project view the Providence Profile.
