The Non-GMO Project
UNFI is a founding sponsor of The Non-GMO Project. The Project, a coalition of organizations from all sectors of the organic and natural products industry, has two primary objects:
- to establish an independent 3rd party non-GMO Verification Program
- to educate and inform consumers and retailers about issues surrounding GMOs in our food supply
UNFI supports the Non-GMO Project because we believe it is essential for the integrity and future of the organic and natural products industry.
Consumers expect organic and natural foods to be free of genetically modified organisms
Consumers want choice and the information needed to make informed choices. A 2003 ABC News poll reported that 92% of Americans feel that the federal government should require labels on food products containing GMOs. The Project aims to provide consumers with a consistent “non-GMO” choice for organic and natural products that are produced without genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technologies.
GMO’s pose serious risks to human health and to the environment, and are therefore fundamentally at odds with the principles of the organic and natural products industry.
It is time to halt the proliferation of GMOs and the organic and natural product industry is positioned to lead the way.
