Japan’s Nuclear Crisis and US Food Safety

We are all concerned about the devastation and humanitarian disaster caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.   The resulting crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant not only threatens human life but also plant and animal life in the ocean and on land.

UNFI, like retailers and consumers in the US, relies on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to assure the safety of the U.S. food supply.  Protecting the public health by ensuring the safety and security of our nation’s food supply is a vital part of FDA's mission and a primary task of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). (For more information about the FDA’s mission, see http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/Transparency/Basics/ucm192695.htm )

FDA brings considerable experience and resources to the task of safeguarding the public against potential dangers in foods imported from Japan.  These resources include: the FDA’s import tracking system, Import Alert system, standard operating procedures, Prior Notice Center, and established procedures and laboratory techniques for measuring radionuclide levels in food.  FDA is posting frequent updates to its web page on Radiation Safety to respond to developments in Japan and to consumer inquiries and concerns.  That page can be found at http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm247403.htm.

In response to inquiries from our customers on this topic, UNFI has reached out to suppliers for information on their specific products and plans.  To facilitate the flow of this information from our suppliers to our customers, UNFI will be posting the information received from our suppliers here on this page.
