UNFI Brings Green Energy to the Lancaster, TX Distribution Center
UNFI continues to prove their commitment to green by purchasing 6,200 MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity for the new Lancaster, TX, distribution center from EcoElectrons Renewable Energy. This purchase will reduce the carbon emissions from the facility by nearly 4,500 metric tons or the equivalent of 10,400 barrels of oil per year. This supplements the over 2 million kilowatt hours of clean solar energy produced annually by UNFI at facilities in Rocklin, CA and Dayville, CT.
Currently, renewable energy accounts for only three percent of total electricity generated in the United States and UNFI’s purchase helps pave the way for other companies to use energy from similar sources. The renewable energy is certified by Green-e Energy, which provides independent, third-party certification to ensure that environmental and consumer protection standards are met.
Lisa Madsen, UNFI’s Director of Sustainability and Philanthropy commented, “Throughout our organization we remain deeply committed to implementing environmentally sustainable practices. By successfully collaborating with EcoElectrons at our Lancaster facility, we’re able to reinforce our long term focus to reduce our ecological footprint by utilizing green power and technologies.” This energy purchase also plays a part in the current application for Gold LEED® certification for the Lancaster facility.
